This course will explain how we run the initiative "Citizens on the Line" in Ethiopia.

‘Citizens on the Line’  encourages and coordinates phone-in programs on COVID19 conducted by community radios. Twice a week, 15 community radio stations with an estimated reach of over 15m listeners, all broadcast four questions on one topic. Individual listeners can react by phoning in live. These questions will always be directly related to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, measures taken by the government and how these measures influence the lives of citizens. The same questions will be broadcast by all 15 community radio stations, as much as possible at the same time. Main aim of Citizens on the Line" is to raise awareness about C19 and inform (local) authorities about views and needs of local communities.

Each show will focus on one theme and will always ask the following categories of questions:

·      Is COVID19 information reaching citizens and what is their response?
·      What does enforcement of measures look like, by local governments, local organizations or how are citizens complying?
·      How well do service providers adhere to measures imposed by the government?
·      What can be done with the feedback from citizens, what action should be taken?

For every round of questions we listen to all shows, collect all listeners feedback, including feedback that did not make it to the live broadcast and synthesize the information into one concise, actionable brief, which will be shared with relevant local authorities and other interested parties for their action.
